Louis Farrakhan to Speak to Students, Public at Bowie State University

Posted By: Reginald Culpepper on October 22, 2012 FEATURED Content Minister Louis Farrakhan, the longtime Nation of Islam leader, will speak to students and the public at a lecture event Friday, Oct. 26 at 7 p.m. at Bowie State University’s Martin Luther King Communication Arts Center, Myers Auditorium. The event, hosted by Bowie State’s Student Government Association (SGA) and the Black Male Agenda student organization, is aimed at encouraging students to think critically and to expose them to different perspectives. “We want to challenge students to not only succeed academically, but also challenge their ideologies and their self-identities. He will challenge students to think and form their own opinions,” said Richard Lucas III, SGA sophomore class president and one of the event’s organizers. Lucas said Farrakhan will also deliver an inspiring message to students. “He always brings a message of love, self-identity, pride, and independence,” he said. Farrakhan’s appearance is part of the “I Am” lecture series, developed by Bowie State’s SGA leaders. The aim of the series is to encourage students to engage guest speakers in various topics relevant to their experiences. Past speakers include poet and activist Nikki Giovanni and actor-writer Hill Harper. Farrakhan has served as the national representative of the Nation of Islam since 1975 and helped expand its reach to mosques and study groups in over 120 cities in the United States, Europe, the Caribbean, as well as missions in Africa.
