Posted By: latoya taylor on October 26, 2012 Dr. Frances Jones Bonner - Daughter of Bennett College for Women President Dr. David Dallas Jones. Dr. Jones Bonner, during her freshwoman year led a successful protest and boycott of the movie theaters in downtown Greensboro, NC December 1937. 'When students learned that white theatre owners in North and South Carolina refused to show films in which "Negro and white actors appear [ed] on an equal social basis" as opposed to stereotyped depictions of blacks, they organized a campaign by members of the black community to stop their support of the movie establishments. After months of picketing their efforts were successful, leading the Carolina Times to conclude that "the step taken by the students in the two Negro schools in Greensboro shows more courage on the part of Negro youth than we have any record of anywhere else in the south." After graduating Bennett in 1939, she received her MD in 1943. She was the first winner of the Helen C. Putnam Fellowship at Radcliffe College in advanced study in Genetics and Mental Health. First African American physician to train and to be a faculty member at Massachusetts General Hospital. She became a neuropathology research associate at Boston City Hospital and assistant laboratory instructor at Harvard University. The MGH Department of Psychiatry and the MGH Psychiatry Diversity Committee have established the Frances J. Bonner, MD, Award in her honor.
