First of all, if a person (white or otherwise) is already a member of an IFC or NPC frat/sorority, they cannot join an NPHC frat/sorority, and vice versa.
Your last paragraph disturbs me, and is probably the reason no one answered this. I'm not Greek, but from what I hear from Greek friends/acquaintances and see in the organization -- white and black -- they dont "use" their organizations for anything. Being in a social org like NPHC, IFC and NPC isn't about networking and making connections. It's about sisterhood/brotherhood, service, and scholarship, esoecially in black Greeks.
I'm not Greek, but I'm a research nerd and a junior journalist (Maroon Tiger, but just for fun). And I strongly believe before you write a newspaper article, you should research before you start talkin out your ass and then everyone is laughin at you.
The Greeks were a historically white, warring, manipulative people who owe much of their civilization to their emulation of Kemet. Therefore, it is no surprise that our Greek-letter organizations have a spirit of elitism and disrespect for one another.
Some would call me anti-Greek, but I am only stating facts and being rational. Take this scenario into consideration: If Tim raped your mother, lynched your father and cut his ears and penis off, would you name your child after Tim's grandfather?
First of all, the Greeks are European, but that doesn't mean they were all physically white. They were Mediterranean, and were most likely closer in color and culture to North Africans than other Europeans like Scandinavians and Anglo-Saxons. Second of all, the Greeks were no more warriors than any other culture at the time -- including African culture. The Spartans were known for being very warlike, but Athenians were the enlightened with a love of knowledge. The Greek civilization contributed some of the best work on government, politics, and philosophy the world has known.
Secondly, the Greeks KNOW that the ancient Greek people ripped their letters from Kemet/Egypt...their letters presumably stand for something, but the whole phrase "crossing the burning sands" refers to the Greeks crossing the sands of North Africa to get the knowledge from Egypt. This is why they use them. Furthermore, the rituals (stepping, pledging, calls and handsigns) more closely resemble that of African culture than of Greek culture.
*sigh*...amateurs...
Tryna revive this a bit...
-When all you hear during the springtime is fraternity/sorority calls
-You have an outdoor market/bazaar once a week
-When ALL YOUR FRIENDS DISAPPEAR for like 3-4 weeks...during the spring...
-When the lines to Greek events wrap around buildings and start an hour and a half to two hours before the event is supposed to start
-When everyone comes back from spring break bragging that they got drunker than the rest of the people with them...
-The strip is empty as hell the week before spring break (cold)...but the week after, everyone's out there (warm)
-You can't go bummy to class in the spring, cause you feel all out of place.
-Everyone knows the BOOTMAN and has seen him at least once
-You park in the wrong spot, you get an ugly-ass brightly colored sticker on your car window (orage VIOLATION here)
-Nobody comes to class three days before and three days after spring break.
-None of your friends registered for class...they add-dropping.
-You see faculty members showing up at football games and homecoming events...
-You've had one white professor since you started school, and you ain't seen a white person between the ages of 18-25 since you got there...except for that one dude, but you forgot he's white since he says "nicca" more than you do
-If you see an ASIAN dude you almost fall over
-The football game gets mad crowded during halftime...and surprisingly sparse during the game
-You eva had to sit on the away side
-You eva had to sit on the away side...and still managed to rep HARD for your school (I mean, we was talking bout their cheerleaders, dancers, band, yellin FUGG you and everything...) cuz a whole bunch of other niccas from your school are there
-Your professor shows up later than you do...
-Your professor shows up later than you do...and announces he has to leave and class is cancelled (aw hell nah...I been sittin here for 15 minutes!)
The four freshman dorms are ABBY, MANLEY, HOWARD-HARRELD, and LLC 1. Each dorm has it's own dynamic, and it's own reasons. Abby's residents are usually closer, as the dorm has a homey feel. HH girls are known for being kinda...wild. LLC I is kind of known as the nerd dorm because it USED to be the honors dorm, but they've been doing it up this year.
You learn about the honors program when you receive your admissions materials, or shortly thereafter. You used to have to apply, but I think you are considered along with your app now. Please don't try to get into the honors program just to stay in LLC I because it has air; living without air is not unbearable, and like I said before, each dorm has it's own dynamic.
The numbers in the dorms:
HH = 181 (6 upperclass RAs)
Manley = 131 (6 RAs)
Abby = 126 (6 RAs)
LLC I = 200 overall; about 1/3 of these are upperclassmen (including 6 RAs), so we'll say 120-130 freshman
You do not have to be in the honors program to live in LLC I as of the 2005-2006 school year, and if you are in the honors program, you do not have to live in LLC I.
Spelman does basically have zero crime, as Public Safety is on point 24-7. It is not considered a crime to get your stuff during X-Mas break, although you are not supposed to. If you work something out with your Resident Director and get a note you will be allowed back on campus. People do not break into your stuff during Christmas break, that is a weird rumor. And I don't know where you heard you have to pay for your phone bill...because we don't. It's included in housing.
I've had friends who stayed in triples and quads, and they were NOT formed by combining two rooms. The larger rooms in Abby are specifically made to house three and four young ladies; the quads in Manley are huge, as they were originally meeting rooms.
And yes, the dorms aren't planned for renovation until sometime in 2008-2009. They are building a new dorm in 2007, but it will be an upperclassman dorm.
Morehouse does, and so does Clark I think. Spelman doesn't, because we have limited parking space. But as someone said earlier...if you know where to park... :lol:
Hi ladies...
Spelman is notoriously bad at getting acceptance letters out on time. However, I do know that Spel-Bound, our accepted students' program, is scheduled for April 2-3, so you would have to get your acceptance letters sometime before them to make travel arrangements and things.
If you applied Early Action back in November and you still haven't received a decision, call the office of admissions. They were supposed to send you a decision by December 31. If you just applied regular decision, it doesn't matter how early you apply...everyone gets notified at the same time.
If you do get accepted, DO come to Spel-Bound! It's tons of fun and we always have a lot planned I see a lot of my Spel-Bound sisters walking around campus now as students, and it's a great way to meet both upperclassmen and your own classmates/future roommates!
