There's literature, and then there's.... Posted on 06-10-2004

BULLSH*T! I am not trying to downplay any of the hot authors out right now, but is it just me, or does it seem like they can't write books the way they used to? this leads me to believe that there must be a difference between literature and just something to read. I would love to see responses to this post, as to what most of you would consider literature.

I can't agree with yall on this bullshit author stuff. Because to me there is no such thing. There are different types of writing styles for different people. I personally LOVE Eric Jerome Dickey and Zane. So I do take a lil offense to people calling them bullshit writers. Excuse me for not liking what u call literature. I feel that everyone likes something different...so there are different authors with different styles to cater to their needs. I'm not taking this to the heart too much. How can u label a form of writing bullshit?

I agree wit my girl Kathy, nothing is bullsh*t if people are getting something out of it, such as the suspense, drama, etc. That is why I read them. Don't tell me what I like is bullsh*t, just say u can't relate to it. And as someone stated, these are not THE ONLY book out there, u just gotta search a lil more Plus the time period has changed, people are gonna write about what this generation can relate to more. I say just search a lil harder for the type of book u like, and u will find it

Their form is not being judged, but their level of talent is . . . . and yes someone's talent can be called into question, regardless of whatever message one gets from the book. Final thought - Why does everyone keep saying "There are other books to read"? No shyt. Of course there are, and we read them. But this post is about authors whose talents leave something to be desired. To the ones who disagree with me, Facetious, and Revolutionary Sista', feel free to add your list of books that were not very well written. Because I refuse to believe that a group of college students thinks that EVERY book that has been written has been written well. The end . . . . until another thought comes to my head

I knew somebody was gon' come in supportin' what I didn't agree to. But hey, Its a free country. You are entitled to your opinion. Obviously, it seems to be a minority of us who DON'T appreciate those authors......I posted this for them.

I hear what u saying, but some people did say that the authors I read have less talent than others because of what they write about. That is straight bull sh*t to me. I find talent in when I am reading. Just cause a certain style doesn't appeal to u doesn't mean that they can't write......

i agree that authors now a day lack the skill that authors maybe in the 1800s- mid 1900s wrote... but i think that is because times are changing. I would rather read a book about a cross country search for the killer of a senator.. then reading a classic liek grapes of wrath. question? do all of u just read black authors? white authors? or both

I agree and might I add simply suggesting that people "look harder" for good literature is easier said than done. Many of these publishers purposely ignore anything intellectualy stimulating from a black author. Everything is branded and if you don't fit the mold - you may be out of luck. If by chance you are published, you may not get the same support as those authors doing the cookie cutter material. I don't necessarily mind what's already out there; it's moreso a problem of there not being a proper balance in contemporary black literature. That is what prompts people to start threads like these labeling what's out there "bullshit."
