I wanna go Au Natural Posted on 05-31-2005
1st Born Second

I think I wanna go natural. But I don't know where to start. Also, i kinda don't wanna give up my perm. I love going to get my hair done and all that other stuff. I've thought about getting braids and just letting my perm grow out. Is that a good start? Somebody help a Sistah out!

If this is something that you really want to do, then I would suggest going to nappturality.com. I have learned so much from that site. The photo albums in the gallery and the forums have really helped me learn about natural hair. When you transition, it's not just about changing your texture, but it's also about changing your mindset. A lot of times the hardest thing to deal with when trying to go natural is the opinion of others. (Last Sunday I almost gave a lady a piece of my mind :x , but I was in church so...) When you finally don't care what other people and what society thinks, then I believe you're ready to go natural. I've been transitioning for 7 months and I think I'm ready to chop off my relaxed ends.

if you think it's for you, go for it! i had long hair until i permed it and it got damaged... about a year ago i went natural... i didn't just cut off all my hair and start over... i kept getting braids and when i took them out, i would cut off a little bit of the perm... luckily my hair grows fast... now there is no perm at all and my hair is thick and healthy (as u can see in my pic)... i say go for it and good luck!
I understand that. My sister had real fine hair. Its still pretty nice texture but it was like real naturally curly until my mom gave her a perm and It got a bit damaged. I have pretty nice hair. Its real pretty especially when I get it pressed or something but I stopped taking care of it. I started to get split ends and stuff so my mom made me cut my hair like super short. When I did cut my hair it was like the length that nia long use to wear hers and it started to get real fine. Whenever I got my hair wet, it would just curl up. It would be so pretty! lol Now its getting back longer. Its still not down my back like it use to be but its getting there. I think its growing rather quickly because its like touching my back and it hasnt even been like a year since I got my hair cut. I use those doo grow products! LOL I use to wear braids like all the time. I dont know when I started but I was real young and I stayed having my hair braid (real hair) and sometimes I use weave to get that super long hangtime but they would always have to be real long since my hair was long. I think thats what started to damage my hair (wearing braids all the time) different things work for different people i guess.

What I meant to say was that it’s hard not to do what the majority does, especially when our beauty standards are Eurocentric. Most times when someone chooses to go against the grain, they get criticized and ridiculed. If I had a dollar for every ignorant comment I’ve gotten concerning my hair...I’ve learned not to care about other people’s comments, but everybody can’t do that.

Yeah, i definately understand what u are saying. I think it really depends on where u are and what is the norm in your area. Poody, in the ATL it really isn't that uncommon for females to rock natural hair. But in other places, peeps may look at u funny, dudes might not holla, or you'll hear funny lil comments. I know in Cali, most females have natural hair, but they still get it straightened on a regular. When i go back home with my fro, my momma says to me over and over "Kenya, u sure u don't want to get your hair done?". Lol, i finally got the hint & went to the shop the other day. I have one friend at HU is absolutely gorgeous and a dude told her "ya know sumthin, u would be a dime if u would get a perm" :x . Peoples experiences vary

I don't see any reason why you shouldn't especially if your doesn't become damaged very easily from wigs and braids. I guess it's all about maintenence. It's kinda the same process since you'll be actually cutting the perm out.(I guess that's what you're saying) But as long as you maintain your hair by keeping it washed, deep-conditioned, and keep some type of oil in your hair so it won't dry out in between the braids I think it will grow out fine. Also I'm thinking you should also try braid-outs/twist outs in between just to let your hair breathe a little before getting the braids put back in. Just a suggestion I want some kinky twists cause I'm tired of combing my own.

^Thanks...I'm seriously thinking about cutting my perm out cause I don't wear my natural hair that much anymore anyways. I've been having it in braids and been wearing wigs for the last year. I think I'm going to let my new growth grow for another month then cut it right before I get my kinky twists.
