THIBODAUX An offensive explosion in the second period after a 1-0 lead in the first period propelled the Nicholls State Colonels soccer team to a 4-0 win over the Prairie View A&M Panthers Sunday afternoon at the Colonels Soccer Complex in Thibodaux.
Four different players scored in the match, with three goals coming in the second half of play. Keisha Brown, Kandice Champagne, Janelle Brandom and Morgan City graduate Lauren OBrien each scored for Nicholls, while the tandem of goalies Molly Mersereau and Amanda Boylson preserved the shutout.
The Colonels began the match agressive offensively, where in the 29th minute a shot by Sam Etherington that hit the post would result in a Panther foul in the box. With a penalty kick ensuing, Champagne found the back of the net to give Nicholls a 1-0 lead.
Right out of the gate in the second period, an Etherington corner kick made its way to Brown and she scored the header goal giving Nicholls a 2-0 lead in the 47th minute.
Coming in at the 65th minute, Brandom would make her mark 20 minutes later in the 84th minute as she would get assist from OBrien for her own header goal to make the score 3-0 in favor of Nicholls. No more than three minutes later in the 87th minute, OBrian broke away and netted a goal with the assist coming from Claire Pitt.
Mersereau tallied over 75 minutes of action in goal with five saves, while Boylson earned 15 minutes.
Nicholls will be back in action again next Friday afternoon hosting Mississippi Valley State University at 4 p.m.
